Birnbaum Lands Decisive Endorsement from California Nurses Association, Gains Huge Momentum on Medicare For All

Cementing his support in the medical community, and gaining momentum for Medicare for All
in California, community care physician Dr. Ron Birnbaum earned the endorsement of the
California Nurses Association in his bid for California’s 51 st Assembly District.
Malinda Markowitz, RN, Co-President of the California Nurses Association, had this to say about
their support for Ron:

“Having worked decades as a doctor in free-clinics, Ron has dedicated his career to bettering
the health of our community and fighting to make sure people receive the care they need. Ron
understands the vital role nurses have played not only in our healthcare system, but in being
the leaders on single payer reform in California by leading the fight for SB 562. Ron gets how
critical healthcare is for our state, and has the experience, passion and knowledge to finally
pass guaranteed universal healthcare for all/Medicare for All in California. He is the advocate

Association.

nurses in U.S. history, with over 150,000 members in every state. NNU affiliate members are
renown as leading advocates of guaranteed healthcare by expanding and updating Medicare to
cover all Americans, for negotiating many of the best collective bargaining contracts for RNs in
the nation, and for sponsorship of innovative legislation and regulatory protections for patients
and nurses.

As a doctor and healthcare advocate, Ron is humbled by the support from the California Nurses
association, and had this to say:

Ron Birnbaum is a physician with decades working in free clinics, delegate to the California
Democratic Party State Central Committee, and progressive political activist, as well as a
husband and father. The bilingual son of immigrants from Argentina, Ron grew up in Toledo,
OH.  He graduated from Yale University with a degree in English and then from the University of
California, San Francisco with a degree in medicine.  After internship training at Children’s
Hospital of Philadelphia and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, he went on active duty as a general
medical officer in the Navy. Ron is a member of the Union of American Physicians and Dentists,
Local 206.  He is on the teaching staff at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center and USC-Keck School
of Medicine, where he is a Assistant Professor of Family Medicine.
